meet the doula
About Ann Meade
I believe that death is a sacred and natural part of our earthly journey that should be faced with an open mind and a calm presence. In the way that birth doulas accompany women bringing life into the world, as a death doula I strive to be a thoughtful companion who will hold space for your unique process with acceptance, careful attention, and experience in emotional health and education.
My professional background has always been centered around education and human services. I attended the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar and earned degrees in Psychology and English. I moved north in 2000 to teach as part of the inaugural New York City Teaching Fellows program, earning a master’s degree in Special Education from City College and teaching in underserved communities in Brooklyn. From there, I moved into clinical social work, earning my MSW at New York University and working in community mental health centers and day treatment programs. I worked with individuals as well as groups, including groups specific to Grief and Bereavement. Eventually, I completed additional training in Marriage and Family Therapy that allows me to be sensitive and capable in my work with families and loved ones of the dying person. I have completed End-of-Life Doula training with INELDA and am a trained and active hospice volunteer, helping a variety of people at the end of life.
Some of my greatest life experience and joy lies in parenting five bright stars in the galaxy of my family. We are a “death-forward” bunch who speak freely about the practical and spiritual questions surrounding the end of life. As Ram Dass said, “we’re all just walking each other home,” and I strive to be a sensitive, understanding companion to friends, family and members of my community.
